Feature Rich Portable Navigator with a large 5.2" display.
Garmin has expanded the screen size of their Nuvi products with their Nuvi 5000 Automotive GPS. The large 5.2” diagonal display offers a whopping 800 x 400 resolution, is sunlight viewable, and has an auto dimming backlight. Even with the large screen, the Garmin Nuvi 5000 is still easily moved from Car to Car, only measuring 5.7”W x 3.7”H x .8”D. With the composite video inputs you can even connect a backup camera for your RV or DVD player to watch a movie right on the Garmin Nuvi 5000 display. The Nuvi 5000 has an internal FM wireless transmitter which enables you to broadcast turn-by-turn directions or MP3 music through your vehicles stereo system. The high-sensitivity 12-channel WAAS GPS receiver gives you the very best in acquisition time and GPS reception with the Garmin Nuvi 5000.
The Garmin Nuvi 5000 Auto GPS is ready to guide you safely to your destination using verbal turn-by-turn directions with text-to-speech routing. Text-to-speech will not only tell you the direction and the distance to your next turn, but it will also announce the name of the street you will be turning onto. Preloaded to every Garmin Nuvi 5000 is the City Navigator North America NT software. The City Navigator NT software features detailed Navteq maps that cover the entire U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. Also packed inside is a database of over 6 million points of interest in categories such as lodging, bank/ATM, gas stations, restaurants, plus many more. Using the touch screen, simply enter the address or name of the point of interest that you are traveling to and the unit will calculate a route based on your preference of fastest time or shortest distance. If you take a wrong turn the Nuvi 5000 will quickly recalculate your route and get you right back on track. The Garmin Nuvi 5000 also features digital elevation maps that will show you shaded terrain contours at specific zoom levels.
The Nuvi 5000 is MSN Direct compatible. MSN Direct service offers access to Real time information on gas prices, weather conditions, traffic reports to route you around delays and construction, local movie times with ratings and movie genre, news and stock reports, and local event information for sporting events, festivals, and concerts. You also have the ability to plan trips and locate destinations using Windows Live Local on your PC with the ability to wirelessly send this information to the Nuvi 5000. The purchase of Garmin’s GDB-50 and a subscription through MSN Direct is required to get these services. The MSN Direct is currently available in over 100 cities and the information is broadcast over FM frequency directly to the MSN Direct receiver. Check this link for a list of cities where MSN direct is currently available.
Other features on the Garmin Nuvi 5000 include: Multiple address routing through up to 10 addresses, user selectable QWERTY or ABC keypad, “Where AM I?” feature for current location and the closest emergency services, and the ability to avoid select roads or areas that you do not want to travel on or near.
My family and I recently had an opportunity to use the New Nuvi 5000 by Garmin on a trip to Florence SC. Florence is about 2 hours away but we had to go to my wife’s parents house first. We were able to enter our final destination in Florence and enter her parents address as a via point. The Nuvi 5000 quickly gave us directions to the in-law’s house and then onto Florence we went. The 5” display was great and easy to read. The voice directions from the internal speaker were loud enough that we did not have to use the built-in FM modulator but I could see how it be great if I had my MP3s loaded. Another great feature that you usually do not see in auto units is the track log. The Nuvi 5000 keeps a track log of where you have been so that you can retrace your steps. I tested this feature in the Mall parking lot and it worked perfectly. I could see how it would be great off-road or for people who are in a new area/neighborhood that is not mapped out yet. All in all, I was very impressed and can see that my wife’s car will have one very soon.
