The Garmin Nuvi 660 is here to take the most advanced vehicle navigation family one step further. Garmin has stuck with the core features of the Nuvi Family but they have made some big additions with the Nuvi 660. The first big addition would be the beautiful 4.3” large color, touch screen display. With the larger widescreen display Garmin has not only made it easier to see, but they have increased the amount of options that are at your fingertips. The ultra sensitive 12-Channel WAAS flip up antenna will give you unmatched performance and reception. The Nuvi’s integrated Lithium Ion battery will allow you to use the 660 away from a power source for anywhere from 3-7 hours. The Nuvi 660 also has an integrated FM wireless transmitter. The FM transmitter allows it to not only broadcast the turn-by-turn voice prompts over the FM channel of your choice, as well as MP3’s that can be loaded into the Garmin 660.
The Nuvi 660 is pre-loaded with the entire Mapsource City Navigator North America NT software. The City Navigator software features street level detail from Navteq for the entire United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, plus all of Canada. Garmin‘s City Navigator data also includes almost 6 million points of interest, with categories ranging from restaurants, hotels, ATM’s, gas stations, shopping centers, plus many more. With the data already loaded to the Nuvi 660, all you have to do is turn it on and enter the address or point of interest that you are traveling to and let the 660 guide you there. The Garmin 660 will give you visual directions, plus verbal turn-by-turn guidance with text-to-speech commands. Text-to speech guidance will take the verbal directions on step further by not only announcing the distance and direction of your next turn but also including the name of the street that you will be turning on. This helps to keep your eyes off the Nuvi 660’s superb display and on the road ahead. If you need to view the map, Garmin gives you the ability to change between the traditional overhead view and a 3-D view of the road ahead and to chose from several different Vehicle icons.

Garmin includes a 3-month trial of the traffic service with the purchase of a Nuvi 660; a subscription is required after the trial..

The Garmin 660 has 700 MB of free space for storage of other programs as well as an SD card slot for optional international maps and the addition of MP3’s and audio books.

On a recent trip to the Raleigh/Durham airport, I was the fortunate employee to get my hands on the latest GPS wonder to test it out. It was love at first sight with the 4” display, which made viewing much easier. Ease of use was another impressive feature with the touch screen, and it had a designated Icon for transit so I just selected Air travel in the menu list, entered in Raleigh-Durham airport and it got me there flawlessly. It even prompted me on my way home that there was traffic ahead to warn me of the congestion on I-40, although I didn’t need to take an alternate route. Between the accuracy of the unit, wider display size, Bluetooth feature and expansion slot for Audio books or MP3’s this is the perfect solution for the day tripper or world traveler.
