I was asked to take the new Roadmate 1470 from Magellan for a trial run, and was pleasantly surprised at the new improvements in both the operation and options of the units.
The 4.3” screen provided clear views of the directions as well as a very clear voice for instructions. There was plenty of warning to allow you to adjust lanes and slow to make turns. It has a chime to cue you when to actually make your turn, and I particularly liked the visible Points of Interest that you can touch the screen and identify and route on the fly to them. Some of the options that are available in the new 1470 are AAA points of interest also a feature that allows you to select area events like town festivals and carnivals plus some notable restaurants, and stores as deemed by AAA.
The 1470 is lighter and slimmer than previous models, and the redesigned suction cup mount is a very nice as well, it now offers a ball and sock joint that can be adjusted and locked in place by using the screw to tighten the joint.
The new Magellan Roadmate 1470 is a unit that does what a gps is supposed to do, which give you accurate understandable directions to your destination.

The RoadMate 1470 is the first Magellan GPS to feature a large 4.7” WQVGA display. The large display of the RoadMate1470 is housed in an ultra-thin, .7” case that weighs only 10 ounces, making this large screen GPS easily stowed away or moved from one vehicle to another. The display also has an auto switching night view, so when the sun goes down the screen changes for optimal viewing at night. The powerful internal WAAS GPS will quickly grab a signal for the satellites and give you the most accurate position and GPS tracking available. The included 12 volt power adapter will keep the 1470 charged up and powered on when connected to the cigarette lighter adapter and the internal lithium ion battery will keep it powered for up to 3 hours without external power.
The Magellan OneTouch feature puts your all of your favorites one screen touch away. Fill up your OneTouch page with your home address, friend’s addresses, or your favorite points of interest to visit and find the closest one to your current location. Avoid paying foreign ATM fees and put your specific bank as a OneTouch item. Do you like coffee from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts; add them to refuel at the nearest location. In addition to your OneTouch favorites the Magellan 1470 has millions of Points of interest for you to set as your destination as well as addresses for the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Recognizing your favorite places is simple because the RoadMate 1470 will display your favorite coffee shops, restaurants, and more by their respective logos.
When your destination has been set, the RoadMate 1470 will give you verbal turn by turn directions to that destination while speaking the street names you are turning onto. Highway lane assist allows the Magellan 1470 to give you an advanced warning to make sure you are in the proper lane for your next maneuver. If you miss a turn the 1470 will recalculate the route and get you right back on track. Have a few stops along the way, the RoadMate can handle that as well, sorting them in the order you put them in or optimizing the stops for the most efficient way through them.
Other features include AAA TourBooks guides and AAA Roadside Assistance. The TourBook Guides show ratings and approved places to stay, eat, and play. Roadside Assistance requires a AAA membership and gives you access to the telephone number to the closest AAA approved help. Optional maps of Mexico are available with the purchase of an additional unlock code. The Smart Detour feature will offer you an alternate route if the GPS notices that you have moved little or no distance over a period of time.
